Unit Description

This unit focuses on developing critical curriculum content and pedagogical content knowledge and skills related to teaching senior secondary English. The unit develops in-depth knowledge of the Australian Curriculum: English and educational theories and models related to the specialised discourse of contemporary literary studies in English education, including textual concepts of multimodality and meaning, digital capability, critical and creative practice, and intercultural understanding. Preservice teachers will critically review a range of contemporary strategies to design for learning and incorporate quality teaching strategies which draw on cognitive science. Preservice teachers will justify students' learning progression towards mastery and assessment to cater for diverse learners, and to program a secondary English curriculum designed to meet learning outcomes in content strands of literature, language, literacy, and English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D).

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically reflect on key learning issues, such as cognitive science, and apply pedagogical content knowledge under Australian Curriculum -Senior Secondary English to plan and design activities that build conceptual knowledge and engage students.
2.	Justify and evaluate contemporary approaches to teaching, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment, rubric preparation, feedback and moderation for senior secondary English.
3.	Design and organise curriculum content into learning sequences that allow for student practice and consolidate learning for the teaching of English literature, literacy, language and English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D).
4.	Plan senior secondary English lessons, including digital capability, that differentiate learning for diverse learners.
5.	Design a range of literacy and numeracy teaching strategies appropriate to the teaching of senior secondary English.
