Unit Description

This unit provides a critical examination of advocacy and practice for inclusive education in Australian classrooms and schools. Learning access plans, goal setting, and differentiating the curriculum are taught, evaluated and considered as aspects of effective instruction for students with diverse learning needs. Strategies for creating inclusive education environments are drawn from the literature and experience and interrogated as necessary practices for continuous improvement in inclusive education.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically analyse the policies and legislative requirements related to inclusive education and describe changes in practice to reflect these documents.
2.	Develop expertise about students with additional learning needs and concepts of inclusive education.
3.	Critically analyse and apply evidence-based pedagogical practice including learning access plans, differentiating the curriculum and developing learning goals, to meet the learning needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.
4.	Critically evaluate and apply best practice principles to create varied, differentiated and/or transformative learning environments.
5.	Develop appropriate classroom strategies using a multi-tiered system of support framework for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities, including differentiated assessment strategies.
