Unit Description

Preservice teachers are introduced to the fundamental tenets of quality teaching and the skills and knowledge for transition to the profession. The unit prepares preservice teachers' understanding of the Australian Professional Teaching standards, the curriculum and other relevant policy documents, to assist preservice teachers throughout their degree, and as they work towards the requirements of the Quality Teaching Performance Assessment within the final placement. The unit will support preservice teachers to unpack the concepts of self-regulation, resilience and the development of core capabilities which are fundamental to teaching and learning. Additionally, Preservice teachers will explore the latest research on how the brain learns, including the distinctions between novice and expert learners, how the brain builds schema, learns to read, and progresses towards concept mastery. Preservice teachers will also have opportunities to connect and interact with academics, peers, and other education specialists.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically assess ethical practice and professional conduct for in educational contexts, considering the implications of cognitive science and developmental theories on ethical decision-making and professional behaviour.
2.	Demonstrate an understanding of the Graduate Teaching Standards through practical application, incorporating brain-based learning strategies to enhance student engagement, wellbeing and memory retention.
3.	Analyse strategies and practices relating to teacher core capabilities and resilience, including teacher responsibilities and continued professional learning.
4.	Demonstrate an understanding of how personal and professional values and beliefs align with cognitive theories of comprehension and learning, and how this understanding shapes teaching practice, teacher identity, and the cultivation of effective learning environments.
5.	Reflect on and analyse key legislation and policy affecting the education sector, evaluating their implications for classroom practice, and professional reflection.
