Unit Description

Students will undertake a human rights-based approach to delivering patient-centred healthcare to diverse populations. Australia is culturally and linguistically diverse with many marginalised and minority groups in the community. Through increased awareness of diversity and inclusive practices, students will develop skills to promote safety in healthcare and reduce barriers to care. This unit will demonstrate the impact of factors such as the social and economic determinants of health and epigenetics on the health of the population. Students will also critique the influence of past events and healthcare policies on the health of Australia's diverse communities, in particular our First Nations people.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critique the factors such as the social determinants of health, history and health policy that influence the health of culturally and socially diverse communities.
2.	Critically reflect on your own values and attitudes to remove barriers to the provision of person centered care.
3.	Develop and practice inclusive communication strategies and other inclusive approaches to create healthcare partnerships.
4.	Deconstruct the concepts of power, privilege and oppression in healthcare.
