This unit discusses woman-centred midwifery care when a woman or her newborn is experiencing a life-threatening emergency. This unit identifies the disproportionate maternal mortality rate for First Nations Australian women and their newborns due to complex interaction of social determinants and health risk factors. While none of the specific life-threatening emergencies are unique to First Nations Australian women, consideration of their health status is essential. Students will explore the concepts of 'root cause analysis', 'near misses', the role of the coroner's court and the admissibility of midwifery documentation, when there is an unexpected maternal or newborn death.
Please note that MID313 is co-requisite with MID311. Students enrolling in this unit must also enrol in MID311.
