This unit introduces students to the core values, philosophy, principles, legislation, and ethics that underpin CDU midwifery and the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice. Building on the history of midwifery, the future of midwifery and its role in transforming safe maternity care for women is explored and the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care is outlined. Students will be introduced to the concept of cultural competency. Students will explore the term woman-centred care and understand the importance of and rationale for using woman-centred language in midwifery communication. Students will demonstrate and understand that by definition, woman-centred language includes any person / community who the woman herself identifies as being important to her.
This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery (TWMID1).
