This unit focuses on the development of students' knowledge, skills and attitudes required to work with women and their families as they transition to parenthood. Midwifery support of early breastfeeding, infant settling, and sleep strategies is also a focus of the unit. Students will apply knowledge of the benefits of breastfeeding, and advantages for the infant microbiome to supporting breastfeeding women and their infants. Students will discuss the transition to responsive parenting, together with respectful communication with parents including those who choose not to adhere to best available evidence, for example, infant feeding, screening, and vaccinations.
This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery (TWMID1).
