Unit Description

This unit covers hydrocarbons, aromaticity, stereochemistry, alkyl halides, oxygen containing hydrocarbons, amines, and derivatives, physical methods used in structure determination and inorganic chemistry of main group elements and transition metals.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Write in a scientific manner using proper nomenclature of various organic molecules and complex inorganic compounds
2.	Distinguish various classes of compounds, their specific reactions, stereochemistry & functional group modifications
3.	Understand the processes involved in the structure determination of small molecules and chemical concept behind chemistry of metals including reactions of complexes
4.	Work collaboratively with fellow students in the lab and tutorials in collecting and analysing data and interpretation of the same
5.	Develop skills in accurately using laboratory glassware for preparation and analysis of chemicals and to for performing various chemical reactions both organic and inorganic
6.	Gain knowledge of the appropriate way of handling and disposing of chemicals and also recycling of material where ever possible
