This unit introduces students to the broad field of group work theory and practice in the human services. Students will explore the nature of group work, theoretical models and different types of therapeutic and task-orientated groups. Issues of power, leadership, interpersonal dynamics and roles in groups are analysed. The benefits and challenges of group work in a range of contexts, including First Nations Peoples, gender and culturally diverse populations are considered. Innovative and creative approaches to group work will be encouraged to support new knowledge for practice within the field of social work and broader human services.
