Unit Description

This unit aims to provide students with a broad foundation in the context, theory and practice of tertiary learning so they have a sound basis in how to effectively approach their role as tertiary teachers. The unit builds an understanding of the role of the teaching academic through the identification of a range of theoretical foundations that inform university teaching and learning. Students will identify current international and national trends and issues relevant to their own teaching practice and context. As critically reflective practitioners, students will be asked to identify opportunities to improve their own skills and knowledge and further develop their teaching philosophy and practices. In this process students will engage with peers as a community of practice. Collaboratively, students will develop strategies to bridge identified gaps and implement these in their own teaching context.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify, discuss and apply the application of selected theories and approaches of teaching and learning in the current tertiary context
2.	Identify the features of learning environments that support minority and marginalised groups and enhance student engagement and retention in a variety of learning contexts.
3.	Plan, develop, implement and evaluate a teaching and learning session in the context of tertiary education utilising effective and appropriate methodologies.
4.	Critically reflect on observed teaching session and provide critical feedback on the planning, implementation, and/or evaluation on the sessions of a peer.
5.	Critically reflect on the effective application of constructive alignment in course design and delivery as applied to systematic review of a unit of study.
6.	Establish a teaching portfolio with suitable architecture to showcase tertiary teaching and learning philosophy, practice, engagement and collaboration and continued teaching and learning development.
