| Theoretical Foundations of Hearing introduces students to the human auditory, speech, and language systems. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the structures involved in hearing (with a focus on the peripheral auditory system) as well as the structures involved in speech and language. Students will be introduced to speech acoustics - the study of the physical properties of sound waves as they relate to human speech, and psychoacoustics - the study of the perception of sound, including how the brain processes and interprets sound waves. Furthermore, students will acquire knowledge about common peripheral auditory pathologies resulting from disease or injury, while also examining the socio-determinants that influence these conditions and their impact on hearing across diverse social contexts. |
