Unit Description

Do you want to develop the confidence to perform a song in public? How can you control your nerves to share your love of singing with an audience?

This unit invites students to learn songs individually and in ensembles and to practice them for public performance. You will be exposed to a range of repertoire and learn how to follow sheet music and to analyse and interpret a song for its phrasing and musicality. You will also identify the physical anatomy of your vocal instrument, gain an understanding of breathing techniques used to produce the sung voice and develop your own vocal style. You will be introduced to vocal warm-ups and a practice regime so that you can develop healthy vocal habits and manage performance anxiety.

You will develop stagecraft skills and experiment with singing in a variety of contexts, from small intimate spaces to larger public venues, practising how to communicate to an audience through song for greatest emotional effect. You will learn the basics of singing using microphones.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify fundamental vocal techniques and safe and sustainable vocal practices.
2.	Analyse songs and scores and apply different vocal qualities for performance.
3.	Recognise music genres and interpret the historical and contemporary contexts for sung performance.
4.	Implement vocal knowledge and stagecraft skills to perform a song or sung musical piece to an audience.
5.	Discuss and revise vocal performance practice and presentation in response to feedback and reflection.
