In this unit, you will discover how to shape the look-and-feel of the on-screen world. You will delve into concepts in cinematography and lighting, so that you can master the technical and creative aspects of visual storytelling in film across documentary and fictional genres.
The unit develops your proficiency in cinematographic techniques, including camera framing, lens selection and camera movement. You will analyse and apply the impact of these techniques on visual storytelling. You will also investigate sophisticated lighting techniques and their influence on mood, atmosphere and narrative by applying principles of colour theory and lighting design to enhance cinematic aesthetics. You will undertake an analysis of cinematic language, including symbolism and visual motifs, to evaluate how these elements contribute to the overall meaning of a film. You will explore and experiment with contemporary tools and technologies, evaluating the impact of emerging technologies on the evolving landscape of cinematography. By the end of the unit, you will be able to synthesise cinematographic choices with narrative structure, considering the role of visual storytelling in conveying character development, plot dynamics and thematic elements.
