Unit Description

This applied research unit offers students the opportunity to conduct the work required to undertake a research project culminating in a dissertation on an aspect of emergency and disaster management. The research process in this unit includes the preparation and presentation of a research proposal and the initial engagement with the literature and potential methodological approaches able to be used in the execution of the project. Ongoing work during the semester will also involve developing, refining and reworking the research proposal as required; ongoing review and critique of relevant literature; refining and reviewing an appropriate methodological approach to guide the investigation of the topic and preparation for data collection as appropriate.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Plan and undertake an applied research project on a negotiated topic of inquiry in the field of emergency and disaster management.
2.	Conduct a literature review and critique for a selected research topic in the field of emergency and disaster management.
3.	Evaluate research strategies and justify a selected methodology, method and design for a chosen research topic.
4.	Construct a plan to share findings and recommendations to relevant professional and academic bodies or publications.
