Unit Description

This is the first of two Medical Nutrition Therapy units in the Master of Dietetics. Students are introduced to the nutrition care process, taking diet histories, modalities for the nutritional assessment of individuals and Problem, Etiology, Symptom (PES) statements. It focuses on the role of medical nutrition therapy in the prevention and treatment of clinical diseases and disorders. Students will develop clinical knowledge, problem solving skills, and clinical reasoning relevant to nutrition disorders, including aetiology & pathophysiology, as well as nutrition care processes including assessment, diagnosis, nutrition intervention planning, intervention evaluation and outcome management.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate knowledge of the nutritional principles and their application for the management of nutrition related disease and conditions.
2.	Critically review evidence linking diet and disease, and client-centred medical nutritional therapy interventions to the prevention and management of non-communicable and chronic disease.
3.	Apply the Nutrition Care process to collect, organise and assess data relating to the health and nutritional status of individuals.
4.	Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations associated with nutrition related diseases and conditions.
5.	Appropriately prescribe and manage modified diets including texture and age-related requirements.
