Unit Description

This unit is the second of two Medical Nutrition Therapy units in the Master of Dietetics. Students will build on their knowledge from 'Medical Nutritional Therapy 1' and develop knowledge, skills and client-centred practise and apply medical nutrition therapy in the treatment of complex clinical diseases and disorders. There is a strong focus on clinical knowledge, problem solving skills, and clinical reasoning relevant to nutrition disorders, including aetiology & pathophysiology for a range of complex and specialised disease states in the clinical setting.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Master of Dietetics (SDIET1)

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate knowledge of the nutritional principles and their application for the management of nutrition related disease and conditions.
2.	Critically review evidence linking diet and disease, and client-centred medical nutritional therapy interventions to the prevention and management of complex nutrition-related diseases and conditions.
3.	Apply the Nutrition Care process to collect, organise and assess data relating to the health and nutritional status of individuals.
4.	Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations associated with nutrition related diseases and conditions.
5.	Appropriately prescribe and manage modified diets including specialized dietary requirements.
