Assumed Knowledge

In order to gain admission to English for Academic Purposes 4 potential students must meet the academic requirements of their primary degree program and meet one of the following English requirements:

CDU English for Academic Purposes - Successful completion of EAP 3 OR

IELTS Academic Module A minimum overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5, OR

equivalent result in another CDU approved English test.

Unit Description

The purpose of this course is to develop overseas students' academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to a high B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages or IELTS Band 6.5. The Academic Skills component aims to help students develop independent learning skills essential for success at an Australian tertiary education institution.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	READING:Identify key ideas, supporting detail, stated and implied arguments in academic texts. Independently apply reading strategies and speed to different academic texts and purposes. Identify a writer's purpose, style and tone in academic texts. Critically review academic texts to determine their strengths and weaknesses for research.
2.	LISTENING:Identify key ideas and supporting detail in extended spoken academic texts on both concrete and abstract topics in a variety of accents. Identify and infer speaker attitude, tone and purpose. Follow lines of argument in group discussions on concrete and abstract topics
3.	SPEAKING:Clearly communicate complex information on a wide range of academic topics. Convincingly defend own viewpoint by refuting a counter argument. Effectively participate in group discussions on a range of academic topics with a (high) degree of fluency and spontaneity using appropriate communicative strategies. Use vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate for spoken academic discourse with a high degree of accuracy. Use a variety of appropriate pronunciation features.
4.	WRITING:Write an extended academic text developing an argument on a complex (contentious) topic. Consistently follow academic writing conventions, including structure, register, signposting and use of citations. Accurately use a range of grammatical structures and academic vocabulary to give precise meaning. Apply appropriate rhetorical functions to indicate a stance. Effectively synthesize information from a variety of academic sources to support an argument.
5.	ACADEMIC SKILLS:Consistently apply group communication and collaboration strategies appropriate in an Australian. university environmentConsistently apply principles of academic integrity such as paraphrasing, quoting and appropriately acknowledging other authors' ideas. Make informed judgements to select appropriate reference sources. Demonstrate an ability to study and effectively communicate in a multicultural settingConsolidate and consistently apply independent learning strategies. Enhance critical thinking skills to independently undertake research tasks. Enhance digital literacy skills to meet the demands of an Australian tertiary environment.
