Unit Description

This unit prepares preservice teachers for leadership and advocacy roles in prior to school and early childhood school settings. The unit introduces theories of and evidence-based approaches to leadership, management, and professionalism. Preservice teachers investigate leadership and advocacy in early childhood contexts in relation to governance, engagement with families and community, Indigenous knowledges, ethics, and moral courage. Preservice teachers are given opportunities to analyse and critique these key ideas to inform their own philosophy, professional identity, and practice.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critique implications of historical, socio-political, cultural and contemporary concepts of early childhood leadership, management and professionalism including advocacy and Indigenous perspectives.
2.	Apply strategies to collaborate with colleagues, families and the wider community, in diverse early childhood settings and schools, to enhance outcomes for children.
3.	Articulate a personal philosophy of professional identity and leadership.
4.	Communicate a coherent vision for potential change and empowerment in early childhood education and care and broader political and community settings.
