Unit Description

This unit introduces preservice teachers to key theories in early childhood language and literacy development. Preservice teachers will develop their knowledge of the principles and processes relevant to the acquisition of language and the development of literacy learning. Pre-service teachers will analyse the planning cycle and apply knowledge of effective pedagogies for literacy and language development, as outlined in the Early Years Learning Framework and Australian Curriculum (Foundation).

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate understanding of and critically review the principles, content, effective teaching and assessment approaches of literacy and the approved literacy curricula.
2.	Critically review theories and evidence base for language acquisition and oral language development.
3.	Identify key skills and knowledge needed for development of English language and literacy, including awareness that children learning EAL/D may need to acquire phonemes that contrast with their other languages.
4.	Assess, analyse and interpret children's learning to make informed judgements to plan for learners across a range of abilities and from diverse backgrounds.
5.	Examine and apply effective pedagogical approaches and practices for early literacy teaching and learning.
