Unit Description

Preservice teachers are introduced to specific concepts and pedagogies required for the teaching of music in secondary schools, in particular Year 7 to Year 10. Australian and State/Territory curriculum documents will be examined to develop, design and plan learning sequences using up-to-date teaching strategies, including the role of explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding. Throughout the unit preservice teachers will develop their own philosophy of music education and be able to discuss their approach to teaching music.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply pedagogical knowledge, including the use of digital technologies, relevant to the teaching of music.
2.	Apply effective pedagogies, to support diverse learners in the secondary music classroom.
3.	Apply discipline knowledge of musical proficiency to plan and design engaging and authentic learning experiences, including the integration of literacy and numeracy teaching strategies.
4.	Implement First Nations knowledges and practices relating to music education.
5.	Critically evaluate, select and adapt teaching strategies and resources to develop a teaching philosophy and practice.
6.	Review current research on pedagogy and teaching strategies of music education, including role of explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding.
