Unit Description

This unit will develop preservice teachers' specialised knowledge for the professional practice of learning and teaching humanities in the junior years of secondary education. This will be achieved through critical reflection and synthesis of the Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), in the areas of history, geography and Indigenous knowledges. The unit equips preservice teachers with the indepth knowledge and skills to implement the Australian Curriculum across the three core humanities areas. Through critically reviewing multiple disciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, preservice teachers will be provided with the opportunity to apply diverse pedagogical practices and teaching strategies to engage students. The unit will develop preservice teachers' skills to think critically and constructively.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply content knowledge to develop learning experiences in history, geography, Indigenous knowledges.
2.	Apply contemporary pedagogical approaches and teaching strategies, including explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding to professional practice as a teacher of history, geography, Indigenous knowledges.
3.	Identify and apply established theories and strategies appropriate for meeting the learning needs of students from a range of diverse backgrounds.
4.	Apply knowledge of current research to develop conceptual ideas about the learning and teaching of history, geography, Indigenous knowledges.
5.	Critically review a range of resources, including those provided through professional associations, appropriate for the teaching of history, geography, Indigenous knowledges.
6.	Utilise appropriate tools and resources, such as technology and literacy and numeracy skills, to enhance humanities instruction.
7.	Identify and demonstrate teaching strategies, including explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding to support teaching and learning relevant to age and stage of learning development.
