Unit Description

This unit is designed to develop preservice teachers' theoretical and practical skills in teaching primary arts. Drawing on the Australian Curriculum: The Arts, preservice teachers will develop an understanding of the five arts: visual arts, media art, dance, drama, and music, as creators and audience. Preservice teachers will critically review, synthesise and apply understandings of aesthetic, cognitive and communicative development of students through a range of learning experiences. Effective pedagogical practices for The Arts will be developed including coherent and intentional planning, sequencing, and responsive teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs as well as positive classroom management to support student's engagement, wellbeing and safety. Preservice teachers will develop skills in identifying, evaluating and improving various arts-based teaching programs.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply current research, theories, pedagogies, and practices that influence teaching and learning in teaching the Arts.
2.	Critically appraise and apply research that identifies the role of the arts in developing holistic wellbeing and knowledge.
3.	Apply effective lesson planning principles to develop quality learning outcomes, assessment and feedback strategies.
4.	Design differentiated teaching plans to account for the learning needs of individuals or groups of students.
5.	Critically examine a range of engagement strategies appropriate to manage and enhance the learning environment, including the use of digital technologies.
6.	Understand and apply First Nations knowledges and practices when teaching art education.
