| This unit extends teaching knowledge and practice that further expands Year 3 to Year 6 English Literacy strand (application of the Language strand outcomes) capabilities to interpret, create and critique meanings in whole texts, and apply decoding knowledge through engaging with literature and texts typically used for learning in all subjects of the Australian Curriculum. Preservice teachers will examine concepts of contemporary literacy education as contextual, meaning-focused, multimodal, digital, critical, creative, intercultural. Theories, models, frameworks, and evidence-based studies of literacy education are critically evaluated, to inform constructive alignments of teaching and learning practice and a range of assessment. Different approaches will develop literacy teaching for fluent and accurate text reading and writing processes, self-correcting strategies, and application of contextual, semantic, grammatical, and phonic knowledge. Research evidence of effective models of literacy teaching, learning and assessment are reviewed, including designing explicit, systematic, and scaffolded teaching that supports a diversity of literacy learners. |
