Unit Description

The unit provides an understanding of how machines are put together using machine elements to ensure safe operating conditions. The basics of design of machine elements is analysed in this unit. The unit covers working stresses, fatigue and failure theories, design of shafts, threaded fasteners, ball and roller bearings, spur gears, and helical and worm gears. The importance of selection of suitable materials engineering materials for machine elements will also be covered. Students will demonstrate the working of the machine elements using CAD modelling software and print a scaled down model using 3D printing machine.

This unit is reliant on on-line materials including electronic submission of assessment items. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection and a scanner.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate understanding of the different machine elements needed to assemble a machine and present the work using CAD modelling software and print a scaled down model using 3D printing machine.
2.	Design various machine elements in an efficient and economical manner and also considering limits and tolerances.
3.	Ensure that the machine elements are designed with safety in mind by applying the various failure theories including fatigue.
4.	Apply appropriate materials so that the machine can operate effectively, efficiently, economically and safely.
5.	Use effective communication methods to convey ideas and principles.
