Unit Description

This unit provides students with advanced knowledge and practical skills for industry-focused research and development (R&D). Building upon foundational engineering design and research methodologies, students will deeply engage with advanced Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Conceive, Design, Implement, and Operate (CDIO) frameworks, and applied industry research techniques. Emphasis is placed on addressing real-world industry research challenges and innovation management practices. Students will undertake comprehensive research-based projects, collaborating closely with industry stakeholders to convert complex design briefs into innovative and functional solutions. This experience will enhance their project management abilities, multidisciplinary integration, and commercial awareness. Through structured workshops, industry case studies, and stakeholder presentations, students will strengthen their research skills, professional communication, and technical documentation competencies, preparing them for successful roles in industry-based research and development.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically evaluate industry-based research and development methodologies, identifying their applicability and limitations within diverse industrial contexts.
2.	Develop and execute structured research and development proposals in response to industry-defined challenges, effectively managing resources, constraints, and stakeholder expectations.
3.	Apply advanced project management techniques and industry-standard tools to effectively oversee and document R&D projects from inception to completion.
4.	Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of industry standards, professional ethics, intellectual property considerations, and regulatory compliance relevant to research and development activities.
5.	Communicate research outcomes clearly and professionally through oral presentations, technical documentation, and visual representation techniques tailored to industry audiences and stakeholders.
6.	Engage in reflective practice, critically evaluating research outcomes, identifying areas for improvement, innovation potential, and commercialization opportunities.
