Unit Description

This unit examines a range of learning and teaching strategies appropriate for the needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This unit prepares preservice teachers to address the range of exclusionary practices that may be encountered in educational settings. It explores effective learning and teaching strategies that promote inclusion and equity in educational settings. Preservice teachers will be provided with theoretical, critical, and practical understandings as well as pedagogical approaches to teaching that meet the learning needs of students across a range of abilities. Relevant legislative, administrative, and organisational policies and processes for teachers will be examined for preservice teachers to forge educational environments that support education based on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, emphasizing the positive impact of community engagement and the importance of cultural safety in classrooms.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse current research on student learning, emphasizing the diverse needs of students including First Nations and EAL/D learners, and assess the implications for adaptive teaching practices that support educational equity and inclusion. including understanding common neuromyths.
2.	Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of physical, social, and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning.
3.	Critically analyse the major theories, administrative and organisational policies that influence educational practices, with a focus on exclusion and exclusionary educational practice.
4.	Develop and implement pedagogies supportive of inclusion.
5.	Demonstrate the ability to employ a broad spectrum of learning and teaching strategies appropriate to the needs of diverse learners.
6.	Demonstrate strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of a range of learners.
