Unit Description

This unit provides students with specialist knowledge required to successfully provide clinical care in the paediatric and neonatal retrieval setting. Students will explore and examine paediatric and neonatal clinical care, specific to the retrieval environment. The impact of the aeromedical environment on patients, procedures and equipment will be discussed. The evidence and theories underpinning the constructs of the paediatric and neonatal care will be explored.

The unit includes attendance on campus for a 4 day intensive. The intensive is compulsory, and students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation in relation to the intensive days.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Explain physiological differences and responses to injury and critical illness between neonates, infants and children
2.	Compare the differences between tertiary hospital care and aeromedical retrievals of the neonate and paediatric patient.
3.	Analyse the challenges that are specific to the neonatal and paediatric patient in the aeromedical retrieval environment.
4.	Appraise the key aspects for crew configuration, asset selection and communication for neonatal and paediatric retrievals.
5.	Assess best clinical practice including family centred care for common clinical conditions and procedures for neonate and paediatric patients in the aeromedical retrieval context.
