Unit Description

This unit analyses the policy landscape in Australian politics at a federal and state level in relation to Indigenous Australians. By exploring the history of implementation and effects of recent policy agendas imposed by governments at different levels and particularly in health and education, students are exposed to and asked to examine the ways in which political power is employed to hinder and support Indigenous aspiration.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse the recent policy landscape in Australia in relation to Indigenous people's health, education and social and economic participation.
2.	Describe and explain how difference and disadvantage in public policy arenas is perpetuated through institutional processes and power relationships.
3.	Compare a variety of perspectives on Indigenous policy agendas in the public sector.
4.	Evaluate policies implemented with a view to improving the economic, educational and health status of Indigenous Australians.
5.	Analyse models of policy development and implementation that engage Indigenous Australians and support respectful and accountable public policy initiatives.
