IND170 - Indigenous Research: Guiding Principles

Unit Description

This unit provides the opportunity for Indigenous researchers to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in conducting research guided by the processes and principles of knowledge creation, negotiation and exchange within the context of their own culture. Students will be required to conduct a small project in consultation with appropriate cultural authorities, using a methodology and research practices consistent with the guiding principles of that cultural context. An important aspect of the project will be the communication of the outcomes of the research in ways that are both respectful of, and appropriate to, the context of the research and that can be understood by other researchers.

Participation in this unit will require attendance at a series of three five day workshops during the semester with access to online resources and face to face or online support sessions in the intervening weeks.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify a research project and outline its purpose and scope.
2.	Develop a research proposal.
3.	Identify guiding principles and research practices in a specific research context.
4.	Collect appropriate data and information for analysis.
5.	Analyse data within the frame of the principles guiding research in the specific context.
6.	Synthesise and report on the outcomes of research.
