Unit Description

This unit introduces you to the theoretical foundations of midwifery care planning, assessment, and management of women experiencing complexities associated with chronic health conditions across the childbearing continuum. You will explore the midwife's role in providing woman-centred, evidence-based care, including interprofessional collaboration, consultation, and referral pathways to support optimal outcomes. The unit examines chronic conditions that may pre-exist or develop during the childbearing period, including conditions that are directly or indirectly associated with reproductive processes. Emphasis is placed on the application of clinical reasoning and collaborative care approaches to support women to navigate complex health needs and achieve a positive and individualised childbearing experience.

Please note that MID210 is co-requisite with MID215. Students enrolling in this unit must also enrol in MID215.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse the impact of chronic health conditions on women across the childbearing continuum, including the physiological, psychosocial, cultural, and environmental factors influencing health outcomes.
2.	Apply evidence-based knowledge and clinical reasoning to assess, plan, and evaluate midwifery care for women experiencing chronic health conditions and associated complexities.
3.	Critically evaluate the midwife's role in providing woman-centred care, including health promotion, education, advocacy, and support to optimise women's experiences and outcomes during the childbearing continuum.
4.	Demonstrate effective interprofessional collaboration through appropriate consultation, referral, and communication pathways to support women with complex health needs.
5.	Integrate culturally safe, ethical, and trauma-informed approaches when providing care to women with diverse health needs and complex chronic conditions.
