| In this unit, students will explore culturally safe and responsive midwifery care, with a focus on First Nations Australians. They will examine the historical and ongoing impacts of colonisation and its influence on health outcomes, particularly in relation to maternal, newborn, and women's health. An emphasis is placed on understanding the experiences of women, families, and communities. Students will discuss strengths-based, woman/community centred, and solution focused strategies to optimise maternal, newborn and women's health for First Nations Australian women and those living in rural and remote areas of Australia. The impact of intergenerational trauma and women being evacuated from their local community to birth is explored, as well as strategies to reduce negative impacts. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Curriculum Framework, The National Schemes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Strategy are adopted in this unit and adapted to midwifery practice. |
