Unit Description

In this unit students will continue to expand their knowledge of obstetric emergencies and skills required to provide woman-centred midwifery care when a woman or her newborn is experiencing a life-threatening emergency. Students will evaluate the role of midwives within the interdisciplinary team, including the impact of effective teamwork on improving maternal and newborn outcomes. Students will review the concepts of 'root cause analysis', 'near misses', the role of the coroner's court and the admissibility of midwifery documentation, when there is an unexpected maternal or newborn death.

Please note that MID313 is co-requisite with MID311. Students enrolling in this unit must also enrol in MID311.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse strategies to prevent or mitigate the severity of life-threatening emergencies affecting mothers and newborns
2.	Identify, plan and prioritise midwifery care when a life-threatening emergency becomes evident, including acquiring assistance and working as an integral member of the interprofessional team.
3.	Apply evidence-based clinical decision making to midwifery practice points related to life-threatening maternal and newborn emergencies.
4.	Analyse the purpose of 'root cause analysis' following a life-threatening emergency or 'near miss'.
5.	Summarise the role of the coroner's court and the admissibility of midwifery documentation, when there is an unexpected maternal or newborn death.
