Unit Description

This unit is the theoretical capstone unit for the Bachelor of Midwifery course and as such is built upon Midwifery Core Values and the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care. It is the culminating theoretical unit that integrates knowledge from preceding units and provides the final preparation for students to graduate as woman-centred, autonomous, caring, safe and competent beginning registered midwives. Students will revisit professional codes, guidelines and position statements, including but not limited to those published by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), partnering body within the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); the Australian College of Midwives and the International Confederation of Midwives; the Australian Government, Australian Digital Health Agency and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.

Please note that MID422 is co-requisite with MID421. Students enrolling in this unit must also enrol in MID421.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Investigate and apply midwifery professional regulatory codes, standards, guidelines, position statements and frameworks to completing midwifery student practice.
2.	Critically review and apply the Midwifery Core Values to safe, holistic and respectful midwifery practice in congruency with the profession's accreditation and regulatory bodies.
3.	Critically discuss strategies that can be used to facilitate physiological childbirth.
4.	Critically reflect how the Midwifery Core Values were applied during their continuity of midwifery care experience.
5.	Develop a personal and professional plan for a sustainable midwifery career, articulating self-care strategies and a personal midwifery philosophy that aligns with a preferred model of care
