Unit Description

This unit introduces students to midwifery practice skills that promote safe, holistic, woman-centred care. Students will learn and practice fundamental midwifery skills. Major themes explored in this unit include antenatal assessment, labour and birth care, neonatal assessment, early postnatal care, midwifery documentation as well as physiological adaptations affecting 'normal' values for clinical assessment. To meet accreditation requirements students must attend 32 hours of simulation block (hurdle), complete 240 hours Midwifery Practice Experience (MPE) (hurdle) and commence their Continuity of Midwifery Care experiences. This unit is only available to students enrolled in the TMIDW1 Graduate Diploma of Midwifery.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate professional competence in skills commonly used in midwifery practice in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice relevant to students' scope of practice, including consultation and referral.
2.	Demonstrate capacity to establish, build and maintain continuity of midwifery care through the recruitment of women.
3.	Develop effective skills in the use of varied forms of communication including digital technology with women and the healthcare team through the implementation of midwifery partnerships in clinical practice and continuity of care experiences.
4.	Demonstrate woman-centred and culturally safe communication skills when interacting with women and their newborns during physical assessments and psycho-social screening.
5.	Compare and contrast similarities and differences in the philosophies of the registered midwife and registered nurse.
