Unit Description

This unit will enable students to work in blood banks and transfusion services. It will provide them with the knowledge and practical skills to safely perform compatibility testing and investigate transfusion reactions and infections. Students will develop and understanding of the human blood group antigen systems, antigen and antibody reactions and antibody detection and identification. Similarly students will gain knowledge of haemolytic diseases of the newborn and transfusion related disorders. They will also gain an appreciation for the medico-legal and ethical issues associated with the transfusion of blood products.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Describe donor screening, blood collection, fractionation and storage, with respect to quality assurance and factors affecting the supply of blood.
2.	Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of blood group antigen systems and the clinical factors involved in blood transfusion.
3.	Safely perform compatibility testing of blood.
4.	Demonstrate an understanding of haemolytic diseases of the newborn, adverse reactions to transfusion and transfusion acquired conditions.
5.	Explain and understand the legal and ethical considerations involved in blood banking and transfusion services.
6.	Discuss recent advances in transfusion science.
