| Throughout this unit students will develop both a theoretical and technical understanding of medially important viral, fungal and parasitic infections, particularly characteristics, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment in the human body. Additionally, students will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of infections involving vectors, animal transmission, laboratory detection and treatment prevention, including in compromised hosts. There will be an emphasis on the practical components, using authentic activities to develop skills in identification and isolation of viruses, fungi and parasites, through the evaluation of various laboratory data to equip students with the knowledge and skills to work within a diagnostic microbiology laboratory. Students will also be required to discuss emerging technologies and their use in disease identification.
