Unit Description

In this unit, students will undertake their final placement, building on their previous laboratory experience by completing another 8-weeks in a professionally accredited diagnostic laboratory. Students will be trained by experienced laboratory scientist within a core laboratory or specialised discipline, consolidation and expanding their knowledge regarding compliance, regulation, safety and quality control and assurance, which are required by a laboratory scientist. Students will develop an understanding of the various laboratory functions and how different disciplines work together to facilitate disease diagnosis and treatment. Students will develop an understanding of the professional standards and strengthen their professional behaviour, critically thinking and problem-solving skills which are essential for employment and will support students as they transition to employment.

Important Information

Students need make sure they have completed all pre-placement requirements and are compliant in order to commence their placement hours - vaccinations can take up to 8 months.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Competently perform a range of laboratory techniques relevant to your discipline, ensuring appropriate safety and control measures.
2.	Critically evaluate the operational role of a diagnostic laboratory and examine how the major disciplines collaborate to enable the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
3.	Apply professional and ethical behaviours as required in a diagnostic laboratory.
4.	Communicate effectively through working independently and as a team member.
5.	Develop knowledge regarding the different factors that influence laboratory operations and management, and their impact on achieving an efficient pathology service.
6.	Critically evaluate and present specialised research knowledge.
