This unit will focus on the essential role, responsibilities, and scope of practice of the registered nurse within a multidisciplinary healthcare team, emphasising the attainment of culturally safe and high-quality health outcomes. Students will learn to identify and apply verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, using cultural sensitivity and safety, to establish therapeutic relationships with First Nations peoples and health care consumers. The unit utilises discussion and reflection on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, legal and ethical responsibilities and how evidence informs nursing care across various healthcare settings. The unit will begin to prepare students for the first clinical placement and their professional responsibility through preparation of pre-placement compliance documents. Proficiency in clinical handover and legal documentation will also be emphasised to ensure the accurate and safe transfer of patient information, promoting patient safety and continuity of care in alignment with National Safety Quality Health Service standards.
