Unit Description

Leadership in all levels of healthcare is essential in creating collaborative culture, positive environments and achieving common health goals. Fundamental concepts and issues related to leadership in nursing and healthcare are explored in this unit as students transition from student to registered nurse.

Students will focus on contemporary innovative approaches to leadership in health care which contribute to maintaining nursing standards and person-centred care. Students will investigate key leadership responsibilities including risk management, clinical governance, quality improvement and change management.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically reflect upon the role of the registered nurse as a leader in the health care team in varying health contexts.
2.	Critically analyse concepts of management and leadership in nursing and health services.
3.	Critically examine the role of the nurse leader in quality improvement and change management practices.
4.	Investigate clinical risk management and the registered nurse's leadership responsibilities for quality and safety in health care.
5.	Critically reflect on the accountability of the registered nurse and the importance of continuous professional development.
