This unit extends students' theoretical knowledge of caring for complex patients within high-acuity settings. The unit explores the key principles when providing care across emergency, peri-operative, intensive care, renal, and coronary care environments. Students will learn to identify and assess common clinical presentations in complex patients, applying their knowledge to recognise early signs of deterioration and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
Students will critically engage with literature as they examine the importance of collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and the nurses' role in complex ethical and legal situations. Students will explore the use of self-care and personal reflection in high-acuity nursing, developing strategies to manage the emotional challenges faced when caring for high-acuity patients, while maintaining personal wellbeing. By the end of the unit, students will understand the strategies used to address patient safety and professional standards within higher acuity settings.
