Unit Description

This unit focuses on patient safety and person-centred nursing care for patients with conditions that affect the neurological system. The unit provides the nurse with an extension of neurology anatomy and physiology with content that focuses on common neurological conditions and the contemporary nursing care guided by evidence. The unit utilises inquiry-based learning and case studies to create a foundation on which patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions are assessed and their individual needs prioritised and managed.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Medical Nursing (UMEDN1) and Master of Clinical Nursing (SCNU01)

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Articulate neurological anatomy and explain the pathophysiology of acute and chronic neurological conditions.
2.	Conduct holistic and comprehensive assessments of patients with neurological conditions.
3.	Critically evaluate the management of acute and chronic neurological conditions and reflect upon the patient and nurse experience.
4.	Collaboratively design and develop a culturally safe person-centred care plan for the neurological patient
5.	Critically analyse and justify the care provided to patients with neurological conditions drawing on contemporary evidence.
