Unit Description

This unit focuses on patient safety and person-centred nursing care for patients with conditions that affect the respiratory system. The unit provides the nurse working in a medical ward environment with an extended knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, the pathophysiology of common respiratory conditions and the associated nursing care of these conditions informed by evidence. The unit utilises inquiry-based learning and case studies to create a foundation on which patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions are assessed and their individual needs prioritised and managed.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the UMEDN1 Graduate Certificate of Medical Nursing and SCNU01 Master of Clinical Nursing.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Articulate the respiratory anatomy and explain the pathophysiology of acute and chronic respiratory conditions.
2.	Conduct holistic and comprehensive assessments of patients with respiratory conditions.
3.	Critically evaluate the management of acute and chronic respiratory conditions and reflect upon the patient and nurse experience.
4.	Collaboratively design and develop a culturally safe person-centred care plan.
5.	Critically analyse and justify the care provided to patients with respiratory conditions drawing on contemporary evidence.
