This unit focuses on patient safety and person-centred nursing care for patients with conditions that affect the renal system. The unit provides the nurse working in a renal ward environment with an extension of renal knowledge and contemporary practice guided by evidence. Students will review normal renal anatomy and physiology, and critique best practice in renal system assessment. Students will build knowledge surrounding the aetiology and pathophysiology of acute renal failure, the impact of aging on renal function and will be introduced to the pathophysiology of the most common contributing disease to chronic renal failure. Students in the Graduate Certificate of Renal Nursing (URENN1) will study NUR549 Contemporary Renal Nursing 2 concurrently and extend their understanding of chronic renal disease. This unit utilises inquiry-based learning and case studies to create a foundation on which patients with acute and chronic renal conditions are assessed and their individual needs prioritised and managed.
Students enrolled in URENN1 Graduate Certificate of Renal Nursing will undertake this unit along side NUR549 Contemporary Renal Nursing 2.
This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Medical Nursing (UMEDN1), Graduate Certificate of Renal Nursing (URENN1) and Master of Clinical Nursing (SCNU01)
