Assumed Knowledge

Unit Description

This unit extends on the knowledge gained in Primary Healthcare Practice 1 and the role of the primary health care nurse in the remote area setting. Students will engage in a mandatory face-to-face on-campus simulation intensive conducted over 3 days where they will expand their knowledge and skills in the provision of primary healthcare in remote settings. Using case studies and inquiry-based learning students will explore the provision of care within the remote primary health care environment. Guided by evidence and research, students will integrate the underpinning theory of practice using primary healthcare principles with practical application to build advanced practice skills relevant to their context of practice.

Students are to cover the costs for travel and accommodation.

Important Information

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the UPHCN1 Graduate Certificate of Primary Health and SCNU01 Master of Clinical Nursing.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply an advanced level of knowledge and skills to plan, implement and evaluate care of patients with complex chronic conditions across the lifespan in a remote area setting.
2.	Appraise communication strategies and resources that a remote nurse can utilise to deliver primary health care in partnership with individuals and communities.
3.	Critically review evidence and person-centred care approaches to design and evaluate culturally safe care pathways, processes and procedures that lead to improvement in health promotion, illness prevention, treatment and care, advocacy, and rehabilitation in a remote community, across the lifespan.
4.	Consult with communities to facilitate culturally safe and strong partnerships with clients, carers, parents, and families.
5.	Critically evaluate the political, environmental, geographical, cultural, infrastructure and funding, service linkages and sociological impacts on remote communities related to the role of the remote nurse.
