This unit will provide a strong foundation for your clinical nursing practice and underpin your enquiry and decision-making processes, resulting in safe and effective nursing care throughout the rest of your degree and nursing career.
In this unit, you will systematically examine the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the human body and disease processes that affect homeostasis and normal function. The unit will provide a brief overview of all human body systems before focusing on the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory, integumentary, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems. You will learn the importance of recognising and responding to changes in an individual's physical, emotional, and psychological health.
The unit will prepare you for your first Simulation Block and subsequent Professional Experience Placement you will undertake in NUR574. Through the enquiry process and collaborative learning, you will develop critical reasoning skills, enabling you to assess and monitor patients effectively. This approach aligns with the Australian Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, which emphasise critical thinking, comprehensive assessment, and the development of safe, quality nursing care.
As you collaborate with peers in tutorials and small groups, you will learn to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills as you deconstruct selected aged care focused case studies and interrogate the research evidence. Discriminating normal and abnormal functions will help you plan appropriate evidence-based care to enable you to assist individuals in their activities of daily living and maintain their health as they age.
