In this unit students will develop an in-depth understanding of the unique role and contribution of occupational therapists in a multidisciplinary mental health team. Learning activities will focus on the application of occupation based strategies to minimise the impact of common mental health problems and trauma on participation in daily life of people of all ages. Students will adopt a Recovery oriented approach, acknowledging peoples strengths, capabilities and self-responsibility to create a meaningful life, when developing occupation-based plans. This unit includes synchronous attendance requirements. Students are expected to participate in scheduled live sessions as outlined in the course timetable. It is imperative that students plan their schedules accordingly to ensure their availability during these synchronous sessions.
There will be a minimum of 30 hours of practice education via simulation incorporated in the on campus intensive program. During practice education, students will apply the Australian Occupational Therapy Competency Standards such as professionalism and communication. Students are responsible for organising and covering their own travel and accommodation expenses related to this on campus intensive. We advise students to plan and budget accordingly for these costs as they are not included in the tuition fees for this unit.
