Assumed Knowledge

Unit Description

This practical unit equips first-year oral health therapy students with introductory skills and knowledge in a pre-clinical setting. Students will establish a concept and understanding of the scope of an oral health therapist, cultivate professional identity and enhanced communication skills, while developing their clinical techniques, record-keeping and self-reflective practices. Key areas of focus include infection control, workplace safety, and ethical conduct. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of oral anatomy which is vital for patient assessment and diagnosis and gain experience with a variety of common dental materials and their safe handling.

The unit includes 145 hours of compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Students will be rostered during semesters and must attend placements weekly. Students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation associated with WIL.

Important Information

This unit is only available to students enrolled in WOHLT1 Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy

OHT102 and OHT101 are co-requisites - students must enrol in both units for the same study period.

Students will be required to meet WIL placement requirements and provide evidence of communicable disease status and immunisations to be eligible to complete clinical assessment items.

Students will be required to purchase and wear uniforms and personal protective attire, in line with industry standards.

Students will be required to purchase dental instruments.

Unit Learning Outcomes

2.	Apply infection control and workplace health and safety procedures to the provision of clinical care, in a pre-clinical environment.
3.	Distinguish anatomy of the oral cavity using anatomical terminology.
4.	Communicate with professionalism and social responsibility.
5.	Demonstrate and describe appropriate technique in the use of preventative and restorative dental materials.
