Assumed Knowledge

Unit Description

This unit is designed to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge required to perform dental procedures safely and competently in a simulated environment. Through hands-on practice and theoretical learning, students will gain proficiency in using dental instruments, materials, and medicaments, and develop the ability to manage periodontal disease and restorative cases. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive risk assessment, patient-centered care, and the importance of preventative strategies in oral health.

This unit includes 145 hours of compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Students will be rostered during semesters and must attend placements weekly. Students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation associated with WIL.

Important Information

This unit is only available to students enrolled in WOHLT1 Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy

OHT104 and OHT103 are co-requisites. Students must enrol in both units for the same study period.

Students will be required to meet WIL placement requirements and provide evidence of communicable disease status and immunizations to be eligible to complete clinical assessment items.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify and describe dental instruments, materials, and medicaments used in dental procedures.
2.	Demonstrate safety and competency in performing basic dental procedures for the management of periodontal disease and restorative cases.
3.	Conduct comprehensive risk assessment for dental caries and periodontal disease.
4.	Communicate the importance of oral health education and promotion of preventative strategies.
5.	Demonstrate proficiency in the essential components of informed consent and open disclosure to enhance provision of person-centered care.
6.	Demonstrate safe and competent technique in the use of ionising radiation for intra-oral radiography.
