Unit Description

This unit introduces computational linguistics and algorithms to process written and spoken language(s). It covers the foundations of natural language processing (NLP) and speech recognition such as language modelling, formal grammars, statistical parsing, machine translation, and dialogue processing. The unit gives the students the opportunity to learn about modern NLP and speech recognition techniques and applying NLP techniques to solve practical problems. In addition, this subject discusses the ethical issues associated to using Artificial Intelligence to produce writings.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply natural language processing and speech recognition techniques to develop solutions for processing written and spoken language(s).
2.	Investigate the social and ethical issues associated to using Artificial Intelligence to produce writings.
3.	Critically analyse and implement the computational linguistics models, methods, algorithms in a solution to a problem and analyse their limitations
4.	Explicate and communicate scientific and technical information with the stakeholders in collaboration with peers.
