Unit Description

This unit will assist students to apply knowledge about the human body and physiotherapy practice including evidence based practice for population groups such as people with a disability, people with gender-specific health needs, people with mental health conditions and people with work based injury management needs. They will learn a risk management approach to the role of physiotherapy in work injury prevention and return to work. When considering working with people with critical illness and within special population groups students will also consider the role of technology and digital health in effective evaluation and management.

This unit has requirements for attendance at synchronous activities.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically review scientific knowledge and connect this to the disease mechanism, pathophysiology and pharmacology for special populations.
2.	Apply a systematic approach to client centred care that integrates knowledge and evidence and includes: assessment, interpretation of information, treatment planning, goal setting and evaluation of outcome
3.	Develop, justify and implement effective physiotherapy assessment and intervention skills for special populations
4.	Critically evaluate research and clinical guidelines that inform assessment and physiotherapy interventions for special populations
5.	Critically reflect on the attributes required of health professional working with special populations in line with shared professional Code of Conduct and Physiotherapy practice thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
